Alliance is the county seat of Box Butte County, in northeastern Nebraska, and home to Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge constructed from automobiles, situated just north of the city. The community was first known as Grand Lake; however, when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad completed its track to the area in 1888, the railroad superintendent changed the name of the town to Alliance, believing that a simple one-word name, near the beginning of the alphabet, would be good for business. In 1942, the Alliance Army Airfield was established, and used until the end of World War II, when it was converted into the Alliance Municipal Airport. The second second half of the novel, The Magician’s Assistant, by Ann Patchett, is set in Alliance, Nebraska. The city is southeast of Hemingford and Berea, and west of Antioch and Lakeside.
