Bassett, Nebraska is the county seat of Rock County. The first settlers in the area built on land along the Niobrara River around 1878, and were followed shortly afterward by some large-scale ranchers, including Captain Andrew N. Bassett, for whom the city would later be named. He built his ranch on the upper portion of Long Pine Creek, herding his cattle in the area where the city was later to be built. The city was platted in 1884, at the time that the railroad came through the area, and incorporated in 1887. Bassett is situated in the north-central part of the state, in an area known as the Nebraska Sandhills. Long Pine is to the west, while Newport is to the east.
