Platted in 1856, and named for the Dakota people, Dakota City is the county seat of Dakota County, Nebraska. It was incorporated as a city in 1858. One of the state’s oldest communities, the area of Dakota City was visited by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which came to the mouth of Omaha Creek in August of 1804, although it was not considered as a town until Dakota County was organized in 1855. Dakota City is south of South Sioux City, and adjacent to Sergeant Bluff, to the southeast.
