At this time, Elkhorn is a neighborhood in western Omaha, Nebraska. Founded in 1865 by George Crawford, and platted in 1867, Elkhorn was an independent municipality until it was forcibly annexed by the city of Omaha in 2005. In an attempt to avoid annexation, Elkhorn simultaneously annexed several surrounding subdivisions, hoping to bring its population about ten thousand, as this would have prevented unwanted annexation by Omaha. However, the Supreme Court rules in favor of Omaha, dismissing Elkhorn’s annexations and upholding Omaha’s annexation of Elkhorn, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the case in 2007, at which time Elkhorn ceased to be an independent municipality. Nevertheless, the community has retained its own identity.
