The village of Elwood is the county seat of Gosper County, Nebraska. Named for Elwood Thomas, an early homesteader, Elwood was platted in 1885 when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad extended its track to that point. As to the naming of the town, tradition has it that the surveyors who were platting the town for the railroad couldn’t decide what to name the new station, and agreed to name it after the first person they met, which was Elwood Thomas, who came by looking for a plug of tobacco. Elwood is southeast of Eustis, northwest of Smithfield and Bertrand, southwest of Lexington, and north of Arapahoe.
