The city of Grand Island, Nebraska is the county seat of Hall County. Prior to the formal establishment of the city, the area was settled as early as 1857, when thirty-five German settlers came to the region from Davenport, Iowa, using local lumber to build the houses on an island that was known by French traders as La Grande Isle, formed by the Wood River and the Platte River. In 1865, surveyors for the Union Pacific Railroad laid out a town which they named Grand Island Station, and many of the settlers living on Grande island moved to the new town, located just inland from the island. The city currently incorporates the actual island as well as the inland community. The railroad reached Grand Island in 1868, prompting further settlement of the region, and Grand Island was incorporated as a town in 1872. The actor, Henry Fonda, was born in Grand Island. Grand Island is southwest of Chapman and Central City, and north of Interstate 80. Grand Island is home to the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center, and is the primary city of the Grand Island Metropolitan Statistical Area.
