Often known simply as Greeley, the village of Greeley Center, Nebraska is the county seat of Greeley County. The town was founded due to the efforts of Thomas Fox, who had the idea that a town located in the center of Greeley County would attract the railroad. He bought land in the heart of Greeley County in 1885, and platted the town. Its population grew after the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad extended its rails to the area in the late 1880s, and was named for its position near the geographical center of the county. In 1890, Greeley Center was named the county seat, taking it from Scotia. Greeley Center is northeast of Scotia and southwest of Spalding.
