Holdrege is the county seat of Phelps County, Nebraska. The community was settled by Swedish immigrants in the 1880s, and named for George W. Holdrege, an official with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, who supervised the construction of most of the line’s track through Nebraska, including Holdrege, which was reached by the railroad in 1883. Holdrege became the county seat in 1885, taking it from Phelps Center. The city was incorporated in 1884, its growth spurred by the railroad as well as good roads that reached it from all directions. Holdrege is southeast of Loomis, east of Axtell and Minden, northwest of Sacramento and Wilcox, and northeast of Atlanta. Scenes from the 2002 film starring Jack Nicholson, About Schmidt, were placed in Holdrege, although the scene was actually filmed in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
