Situated in southeastern Nebraska, Lincoln is the second largest city in the state, by population, as well as the capital of Nebraska and the county seat of Lancaster County. Founded as the village of Lancaster in 1856, the village was renamed Lincoln when it became the state capital. The name change was urged by citizens of Omaha, who hoped to derail the shifting of the capital from Omaha to Lincoln, given the Confederate sympathies of many Nebraskans. Lincoln was home to several famous people, including William Jennings Bryant, Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, Dick Cheney, Charles G. Dawes, and Hilary Swank.
