Formed in 1900 when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad made its way to the region, the city of Mitchell is in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, not far from the Wyoming border. Named for Fort Mitchell, the city was incorporated in 1902. Prior to its settlement, the area was crossed by the Oregon and Mormon trails, and two Russell brothers ran a store and post office in the area, then known as Thompson. In 1893, they renamed their properties Mitchell for the fort that had been abandoned in 1868. Then, when the railroad built a spur at nearby Sunflower, the Russells moved their post office across the river to access the rail line, thus creating the community of Mitchell. The Scotts Bluff County Fair is held annually in Mitchell. The city is northwest of Scottsbluff and Gering, and southeast of Morrill and Henry.
