Platted in 1874, and incorporated in 1882, the city of O’Neill is the county seat of Holt County, Nebraska. Initially named Holt City, the town was named for John O’Neill in 1880. In 1881, the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad extended its tracks to O’Neill, leading to rapid early growth. The city’s original settlers were Irish immigrants, leading its 1969 designation as the Irish Capital of Nebraska.
