Pawnee City is the seat of Pawnee County, Nebraska. Originally a Pawnee Indian village along Turkey Creek, the area was settled by a group of pioneers from Ohio who came in 1854. Due to its location in the center of Pawnee County, it was named the county seat in 1855. A post office was established in 1858, at around the time that the town was incorporated. Growth in Pawnee City was sparked when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad extended its track to the town in 1881, and the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad came through in 1886. David Butler, the first governor of Nebraska, was a resident of Pawnee City, and Daniel Lawrence Whitney, also known as Larry the Cable Guy, was raised on a pig farm near town. Pawnee City is southwest of Table Rock and east of Burchard, in southeastern Nebraska, not far from the Kansas border.
