Plattsmouth is the county seat of Cass County, Nebraska. The city is located at the confluence of the Platte and Missouri rivers, at an area that had previously been visited by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Settlement of the community began after Samuel Martin obtained a license to operate a ferry across the Missouri River at what is now Glenwood, Iowa. He received a permit from the Secretary of War to establish a trading post, which was known as the Barracks, consisting of a two-story home and another building that served as the trading post. Considered, but passed over as the territorial capital, Plattsmouth was incorporated as a town-company, and named the seat of government for Cass County. In 1911, a bridge was built across the Platte River, replacing the ferry. Plattsmouth is south of Gilmore and Bellevue, at Nebraska’s border with Iowa.
