Located in Scotts Bluff County, in western Nebraska, the city of Scottsbluff was founded in 1899, across the North Platte River from the bluff for which it was named, now part of the National Park Service, known as Scotts Bluff National Monument. Scottsbluff is across the river from Gering, an older but small community on the south side of the river, while Scottsbluff was built along the north banks. Like many other towns, settlement of Scottsbluff was largely encouraged by the extension of the railroad to the area. Shortly after the Burlington Railroad was extended along the North Platte Valley, the town site was laid out and businesses came to the new town, including stores, a hotel, and a newspaper. Although Gering and Scottsbluff are independent cities, they have always been connected to one another in many ways, including the sharing of some facilities, and a Chamber of Commerce that represents businesses in both cities.
