Syracuse, Nebraska is a second class city in Otoe County, Nebraska. When the community was first settled in 1856, after salt was discovered there, Syracuse was located southeast of where Unadilla now is. Soon, it was determined that salt mining would not be successful, and its post office changed locations in 1863, after the community’s hotel and livery barn were moved to Nursery Hill, along a wagon trail going west, on the western edge of the current location of Syracuse. Platted in the late 1850s, a school was established soon afterwards, and the Midland Pacific Railway extended its track to the area in 1871, establishing a station there, after which Nursery Hill’s businesses moved to Syracuse, and the town was incorporated in 1875. Syracuse is between Unadilla and Dunbar.
