Wahoo, Nebraska is the seat of the Saunders County government. The city is located at the intersection of Highways 92 and 77, about forty miles west of Omaha and thirty miles north of Lincoln. Prior to its settlement by European-Americans, a Pawnee Indian village was in what is now the southeastern part of Wahoo. In 1869, a group of land developers bought the land in the hopes of developing a town. Originally, the town was named Leesville, for the Lee family, three of whom were founders. Before long it was changed to Wauhoo, but the “u” was dropped by postal authorities when they approved a post office there. At about the same time, another settlement was under development just two miles north of Wahoo, known first as Swedeburg, then Eldred. In a close vote, Eldred being its primary competitor, the county seat was moved from Ashland to Wahoo, after which Eldred faded away. The railroad arrived in Wahoo in 1876, and eventually three railroads came through the town.
