Gardnerville, Nevada is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, situated adjacent to the county seat of Minden. The town grew up around the Kent House, a building that was rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a stagecoach robber, which was moved to the area of Gardnerville by Lawrence Gilman in 1879. The Kent House became the Gardnerville Hotel, named for John M. Gardner, the previous owner of the land, whose name the town took. Gardnerville became a feed stop for freight teams traveling between Carson City and the mining camps in the Esmeralda Mining District and Bodie, which was booming after an 1878 gold strike. Gardnerville Ranchos is south of Gardnerville.
