Although Laughlin, Nevada has a population of approximately seven thousand people, it is a township and not an incorporated municipality. Laughlin is located in Clark County, in the southern tip of Nevada, about ninety miles south of Las Vegas. Named for Don Laughlin, who purchased the land in 1964, after which it was informally known as South Pointe. Mr. Laughlin opened what would later become the Riverside Resort, where he offered gaming tables, a dozen slot machines, and eight motel rooms, half of which were occupied by members of his family. He wanted to call the new town Riverside or Casino, but the post office opted for Laughlin. After Las Vegas and Reno, Laughlin is the third most visited casino and resort destination in Nevada, and is particularly popular among RV enthusiasts. Nearby communities include Bullhead City, Arizona; Needles, California; and Fort Mohave and Mohave Valley, Arizona.
