The unincorporated town of Spanish Springs is in Washoe County, Nevada. Sky Ranch Airport, a 2,000-foot 1940s dirt airstrip northeast of the intersection of Highway 445 and Spanish Springs Road, was the site of the first Reno Air Races in 1964 and 1965, before becoming the headquarters of the 126,000-acre Rocketdyne Nevada Field Laboratory, used in the late 1960s and early 1970s to test rocket engines used in the space program. Currently, this area is covered with housing developments, while another airfield was created to the west, known as Spanish Springs Airport. Spanish Springs is northeast of Sun Valley and southeast of the Reno Sparks Indian Colony. The journalist, Tom Darby, was a Spanish Springs resident.
