The county seat of Humboldt County, Nevada, the City of Winnemucca was named for the 19th-century Paiute Chief, who lived with his band in a camp near there. His daughter, Sarah Winnemucca, was an advocate for the Paiute and Shoshone people, and an interpreter for the U.S. Army during the Bannock War of 1878. She published the first autobiography written by a Native American woman in 1883. The town began to grow after the Central Pacific Railroad reached Winnemucca in 1868. The Winnemucca Indian Colony of Nevada has its headquartered in Winnemucca. The city is located along Interstate 80, between Rose Creek and Golconda, at the intersection of I-80 and US Route 95.
