Originally known as New Durham Gore, the town of Alton, New Hampshire was settled in 1770, mostly by farmers, and incorporated in 1796, when its name was changed to Alton, after a small market town in Hampshire, England. Alton, in Belknap County, is home to Alton Bay Forest and Mount Major State Forest. The village of Alton Bay is located within the town, at the southern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee, while the village of Alton is one mile further south. The town is served by five state state highways: New Hampshire Routes 11, 11-A, 28, 28-A, and 140.
