The town of Barnstead, in Belknap County, New Hampshire, was settled in 1767, and incorporated that same year. Its early economy was basically agricultural, as the soil was easy to cultivate, and the terrain was good for grazing sheep. The Suncook River and its tributaries provided water power for mills, which included a woolen factory, seven sawmills, four shingle mills, four clapboard mills, a grooving machine, a turning machine, and two tanneries. Lumber was also exported to neighboring towns. The villages of Center Barnstead, Barnstead Parade, and South Barnstead are within the geographical confines of the town.
