The area that was to become the town of Bow, in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, was once under dispute, claimed by both New Hampshire and Massachusetts, until the final boundaries were drawn in 1741, giving New Hampshire more territory than it had claimed. The town was named for its location at the bend, or bow, in the Merrimack River. Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist, was born in Bow, and John Ordway, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, was a resident of the town.
