The town of Bradford is in Merrimack County, New Hampshire. Bradford includes the unincorporated communities of Bradford Center and Melvin Mills, as well as the townsite of Bradford itself. The area that became Bradford was granted by Governor Benning Wentworth to John Pierce and George Jaffrey in 1765, and it as settled in 1771, mostly by settlers who came from Bradford, Massachusetts, for which the town was named. Initially, the new settlement was called New Bradford, and later Bradfordton, but it was incorporated as Bradford in 1787. Lake Massasecum is situated in the eastern part of the town. John Q.A. Brackett, the 36th governor of Massachusetts, was born in Bradford.
