The town of Brentwood, New Hampshire has been the seat of Rockingham County since 1997. Before the Europeans came, the Pennacook Abenaki farmed, fished and hunted there. The community was first known as Brentwood Parish, and was a part of Exeter. Residents of the parish petitioned to be set off from Exeter in 1738, and were denied. In 1742, permission was obtained and Brentwood was incorporated as an independent town. Its early economy was fueled by the lumbering industries and by mills set up along the rivers.
