Chester, New Hampshire is in Rockingham County, east of Manchester, and near the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border. The town’s beginnings go back to 1719, when about eighty people formed an association for the purpose of securing a tract of land in what was then known as Chesnut Country, and stationed three people there to hold possession of the property. Originally named Cheshire, the community was incorporated as Chester in 1722. The town once included all of Candia, which separated from Chester in 1763.
