Located in Coos County, New Hampshire, the town of Clarksville was incorporated in 1853, although it was known as Dartmouth College Grant until 1872, when it was renamed for the Clark family, who first cleared the land for settlement in the late 1820s and early 1830s. Originally, the land was granted to Dartmouth College, but sections were sold off to raise money for the school. The small town is bordered to the north and west by Pittsburg, to the west by the Connecticut River, to the south by Stewartstown, Dixville and Dix’s Grant, and to the east by Atkinson and Gilmanton Academy Grant. Its early industries include logging, as well as starch and maple syrup production.
