Located in Coos County, in northern New Hampshire, bordering Vermont, the town of Dalton was incorporated under the name of Chiswick in 1764, which was changed to Apthorp in 1770, then Dalton in 1784, named for Tristram Dalton, who served as a senator from Massachusetts. The unincorporated hamlet of Cushman, situated on the Connecticut River, is within the town limits.
