Effingham is a small town in Carroll County, New Hampshire. Within the boundaries of the town are the villages of Effingham (Lord’s Hill), Effingham Falls, Center Effingham (Drake’s Corner), and South Effingham. The Pine River State Forest is in the southern part of the town. First settled by members of the Leavitt family, the community was known as Leavitt’s Towns until 1749, when it was renamed Effingham by Governor Benning Wentworth. Effingham was incorporated in 1778 and, in 1831, North Effingham separated, and was incorporated as Freedom. Effingham was the first Normal School in New Hampshire, which was established in 1830 on the second floor of the Effingham Union Academy Building, built in 1819.
