Situated along Lake Winnipesaukee, in Belknap County, New Hampshire, the town of Gifford is home to Governors Island, Ellacoya State Beach, Belknap Mountain State Forest, Gunstock Mountain Ski Resort, and the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion at Meadowbrook, an outdoor concert venue. Originally part of Gilmanton, the town was known as Gunstock Parish when it was settled in 1778. The community was incorporated as a town in 1812, and named Guilford after the 1781 Battle of Guilford Court House in North Carolina, for Captain Lemuel B. Mason, a resident who had fought in that war. The spelling of the town’s name was later changed to Gilford, due to a clerical error. Gilford is northeast of Laconia and northwest of Belknap Mountain.
