Incorporated in 1761, Grantham, in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, was named for Thomas Robinson, 1st Baron Grantham, Secretary of State for the Southern Department from March of 1754 to October of 1755. As part of a charter granted to Baron Grantham in 1761, the families of Howe, Dunbar, and Leavitt were among the first settlers of the area, and each of these families have hills within the town named for them. The highest point in town is Grantham Mountain, a peak along the ridge of Croydon Mountain, that runs along the western boundaries of the town. Grantham is west of Springfield and southeast of Meriden.
