The town of Greenfield was initially a part of Lyndeborough, known as Lyndeborough Slip, or the Lyndeborough Addition, the area was first settled by the Lynde family in 1753. Because they were separated from the town’s church and school by mountains, residents petitioned to separate in 1791, incorporating as a new town in 1791, choosing a name that would highlight the town’s level, fertile ground, as compared to the mountainous area surrounding it. Greenfield is home to the Yankee Siege, the most powerful trebuchet in the world. The town is also home to the first wheelchair-accessible treehouse in New Hampshire, created as a project of the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center.
