Newton is in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Before being incorporated as a separate town, initially named Newtown, by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1749, the area was part of several other towns, including Salisbury, Amesbury, and South Hampton, Massachusetts. When it became an independent municipality, it was named New Town simply because it was a new town. The New Hampshire legislature voted to contract the name of the town to Newton in 1846. Villages within the town include Newton, Newton Junction, Rowes Corner, Sargent Corners, and Crane Crossing. Newton is south of East Kingston, southwest of Kensington, and northeast of Plaistow.
