Settled in the early 1770s, Northfield was initially incorporated as part of Canterbury when that town was established in 1741, and was known for being the north fields of Canterbury. By 1780, residents in the north fields were having difficulty traveling to the center of Canterbury to transact business, so they petitioned to become an independent town, and it was incorporated on that year. Located in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, the town’s earliest economy was agricultural, but dams were soon built along the Winnipesaukee and Merrimack rivers, and on several brooks, powering sawmills and gristmills. Northfield is adjacent to Tilton, with whom it shared several services, including a school district.
