Ossipee, New Hampshire is the county seat of Carroll County, and it contains several unincorporated villages, including Center Ossipee, Ossipee Corner, West Ossipee, Moultonville, and Water Village. The town borders Freedom, Effingham, Madison, Moultonboro, Tamworth, Tuftonboro, Wakefield, and Wolfeboro. Ossipee was initially named Wigwam Village, then New Garden, and was once the site of an Indian stockade fort, used to protect the Ossipee Indian tribe from the Mohawks. The Indian fort was destroyed in 1725, then rebuilt by Captain John Lovewell, the new fort being one of the largest in New England. Ossipee became a town, under that name, in 1785.
