Chartered in 1761, the town of Plainfield was chartered in 1761, and includes the Plainfield Village, Meriden Village, and East Plainfield, in Sullivan County, New Hampshire. The town of Plainfield is located on the northern edge the Cornish Art Colony, which existed from 1895 through the years of World War I. The artist, Maxfield Parrish, bought land near his parent’s estate in Plainfield in 1898, when he was twenty-eight, living in Plainfield for most of sixty-seven years. Other notable residents of Plainfield have included the actress, Ethel Barrymore, who was a summer resident, and Ben Cherington, manager of the Boston Red Sox. Plainfield is across the Connecticut River from Hartland, Connecticut, and west of Meriden, New Hampshire.
