The small town of Roxbury is in Cheshire County, in southwestern New Hampshire. The town was incorporated from portions of Keene, Marlborough, and Nelson in 1812. Prior to its incorporation, there were some farms and a few mills and granite quarries in the area, as well as a community center, located in the area that is now known as Roxbury Center. Roxbury was largely abandoned following the American Civil War, as most of its male population had fallen victim to the war, while others left to find work in local mill villages or to settled the American Midwest. Otter Brook Lake, created by the Army Corps of Engineers in the mid-1950s, is in the western portion of the town, while Granite Gorge Ski Area on Pinnacle Mountain is in the northwestern part of Roxbury, despite advertising stating that it is in Keene.
