The small town of Sharon is in the Monadnock Region of Hillsborough County, in south-central New Hampshire. The area was first settled as part of Peterborough Slip in 1738, at which time it included what is now Temple. In 1777, its residents petitioned to become part of Peterborough but were denied. The community became known as Sliptown until 1791, when it was incorporated as Sharon, named for the town in Connecticut where many of its early settlers came from. The author, P.J. O’Rourke, resides in Sharon, at least part of the year. The Gridley River flows through the town, north into the Contoocook River. Sharon is south of Peterborough, west of Temple, east of Jaffrey, and northwest of New Ipswich and Greenville.
