Originally named Stuart, for Sir John Stuart, Stewartstown, in Coos County, New Hampshire, was granted in 1770 and incorporated as Stewartstown in 1795, after the Revolutionary War. Its primary village is West Stewartstown, across the Connecticut River from Canaan, Vermont. The village of Stewartstown is a mile northeast of West Stewartstown, opposite Beecher Falls, Vermont, and the village of Stewartstown Hollow is along NH Route 145, near the geographic center of the town. The town’s municipal offices are in West Stewartstown.
