The town of Sunapee, in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, includes the unincorporated village of Georges Mills and part of Lake Sunapee. The community went through a number of names, including Saville, Corey’s Town, and Wendell. Incorporated as Wendell in 1781, its name was changed to Sunapee in 1850. The town’s early economy was based in industry, including a large clothespin factory. In recent years, it has become a tourist attraction, in part because of Lake Sunapee and its three working lighthouses. Prominent residents of Sunapee have included Ken Burns, a producer of documentary films, and Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith. Sunapee is northwest of Newbury, southwest of New London, and northeast of Newport.
