The town of Swanzey is situated along the Ashuelot River in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, consists of the town center, as well as the villages of East Swanzey, West Swanzey, North Swanzey, and Westport. Granted in 1733, the town was originally known as Lower Ashuelot, one of the first towns established by Colonial Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts, as Massachusetts then claimed the land upon which Swanzey is located. Several battled took place in Swanzey during King George’s War, and it was abandoned for three years. In 1753, after the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border was established, it was re-granted by Governor Benning Wentworth in 1753, at which time it was named Swanzey. The town includes four covered bridges.
