Granted in 1766 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, the town of Tamworth, in Carroll County, New Hampshire, includes the unincorporated villages of Chocorua, South Tamworth, Wonalancet, and Whittier. Also included within the town are Hemenway State Forest and White Lake State Park, as well as a portion of the White Mountain National Forest in the northern part of the town. The Barnstormers Theatre was established by Francis Grover Cleveland, son of President Grover Cleveland, in 1931, who supported its operations until his death in 1995. President Cleveland was a summer resident of Tamworth.
