Granted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1766, and named for the governor, the town of Wentworth is in Grafton County, New Hampshire. A portion of the White Mountain National Forest is in the northeastern part of the township, and Plummer’s Ledge Natural Area is located within the town. Wentworth’s early economy was dependent upon water power from the Baker River to power its mills but, in 1856, dams on the Upper and Lower Baker ponds breached during a flood, washing away the the town’s mills, houses, barns, sheds, and roads, widening the river by almost ninety feet. Wentworth is south of Warren and northwest of Rumney.
