The borough of Allendale, in Bergen County, was formed in 1894 from portions of Franklin, Hohokus and Orvil townships. Settled in the early 1700s, the Allendale area was part of a precinct with no official local government until 1767, when it became known as Paramus. Then, during the first half of the nineteenth century, it was known as the Turnpike, named for a toll road that ran through the settlement. Allendale is south of Ramsey, north of Waldwick, and west of Saddle River.
