Known today for its gambling facilities, Atlantic City, New Jersey is renowned as a destination for conventions and leisure activities, and was the inspiration for the original Monopoly board game. Situated on Absecon Island, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, the Atlantic County community became a city in 1854, composed of portions of Egg Harbor Township and Galloway Township, and was initially accessible primarily by railroad, as rail service began the same year the city was incorporated.
