Belleville Township is in Essex County, New Jersey. The community was originally known as Second River, then Washington. In 1797, residents renamed their settlement Belleville, although it was not incorporated until 1839, incorporating parts of Bloomfield. Within the township, the independent municipality of Belleville City was created in 1874, dissolved in 1876, then reincorporated as a town in 1910. The Second River forms a portion of the border between Belleville and Newark, as it runs through Branch Brook Park.
