The city of Bridgeton is in Cumberland County, in southern New Jersey, of which it is the county seat. The community is situated along the Cohansey River, near Delaware Bay. European settlement of the area began after Richard Hancock built a sawmill there in 1686. An iron works industry was established in 1814, and Bridgeton was incorporated as a township in 1845, becoming a city in 1865, replacing Bridgeton Township and Cohansey Township.
