Incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature in 1894, the borough of Cresskill, in Bergen County, was named for the watercress that grew along its streams and creek, also known as kills. During World War I, Camp Merritt, a military base in Creskill was a major debarkation point for American troops being sent abroad. The camp was decommissioned following the war. Cresskill is south of Demarest, west of Alpine, and northeast of Bergenfield.
