Organized in 1903, the borough of Demarest is in Bergen County, New Jersey. Although David Demarest settled in the area in 1677, and Samuel Demarest, his great-great grandson, operated a mill there prior to the Revolutionary War, and was captured in a Tory raid in 1779, in which his son, Cornelius, was killed, the borough was named for Ralph S. Demarest, the great grandson of Samuel. Ralph Demarest was a State Senator from New Jersey, and a director of the Great Northern Railroad of New Jersey.
