What is now Dumont was originally settled as Schraalenburgh in the early 1600s as a Dutch province that included what is now the boroughs of Bergenfield, Dumont, Haworth, and parts of Closter. The area was ceded to the British in 1664, and briefly recaptured by the Netherlands in 1673, but soon restored to British control. Schraalenburgh was established as a borough in 1894, but its name was changed to Dumont in 1898, in honor of Dumont Clark, the borough’s first mayor. Dumont is north of Bergenfield in Bergen County, New Jersey.
